Hi, thanks for taking the time to read more about me. I was born on September 12, 1971, in PA, where I still live. However, now I live in a different area from the one where I was born. About two months after I was born, my mother noticed something strange. She took me to the doctor, and explained that it didn't seem like I could see anything. He said not to worry about it, but four months later, I still could see nothing. He sent me to an ophthalmologist, who diagnosed me with septo optic dysplasia. This condition caused my optic nerve to not develop properly, and, we found out later, affected my pituitary gland as well. When I was five, I started attending Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia and went there until I was 11. When I was 8 or 9, it was discovered that I was not growing properly, so I was started on growth hormone shots and received those until I was about 12 years old. Then it was discovered that the growth hormone I was taking was causing some people to actually get sick and die. I was given a new hormone, but this was too expensive and my parents could not afford it at the time, so it was decided that, at 4 ft 7 inches, I was tall enough not to be a dwarf. I did grow an extra inch after that, but that is all I ever grew. When I was 12, I left Overbrook and went to a regular public school for the rest of my schooling. When I was a junior in high school, at about 18, it was discovered that my thyroid gland was not functioning properly, and then that I didn't have enough estrogen, so i started taking pills for those as well. When I graduated, I went to college for one year, but the pressures I was under, with incooperative professors and a nonfunctioning disability department, were too much, I thought, to handle, so, unfortunately, I dropped out. Eventually, when I was 23, I got a job working for at&t, and worked there for five years. On October 3, 1996, I married a wonderful man named Merv who I met while working for At&T. the picture you see on this page is a picture of my father and I at the wedding. You can see a wedding picture of Merv and I on my home page. In January of the year 2000, At&t dismissed a bunch of us. Merv, who also worked for at&T, as well as me, got dismissed. We studied medical transcription and both earned professional certificates from CareerStep, a school specializing in medical transcription. We are both looking for jobs.
